(Photo of Black Tern ...) August Bird Walk - ED Center, Horicon Marsh

Our August walkers covered the trails surrounding the impoundment near the International Education Center. The weather was beautiful and the birds certainly cooperated. Highlights included extended looks at Black Tern parents feeding a number of fledglings. We were able to see many "handoffs" of food and watch the begging behavior of the youngsters. Another highlight was a flyby look at a small flock (about a half dozen) of Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. Then we had close looks at two young Ospreys on the nesting platform. The parent Ospreys have already migrated. One of the youngsters was eating a catch while the second at one point could be heard calling loudly. Most of us had never heard such a sound from an Osprey before. Three rare treats for our contingent of birders!

If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you can join us next time!
