(Photo of American Goldfinch ...) October Bird Walk - Horicon State Wildlife Area

What a day! Cold, strong winds, and rain to start with. Yet eight hardy birders arrived for what turned out to be a very satisfying birdwalk. The rain stopped shortly after we started and the wind was no problem when among the trees. The skys even cleared - a little bit. No doubt the wind kept some small birds down where it was stongest, but there were fun birds to see. Among the special treats was a juvenile Bald Eagle which flew low practially over our heads. Along the trail we encountered a tree brimming with colorful Cedar Waxwings. And of course, there were the many Canada Geese on the water and in the air as is always the case at this time of year in Horicon Marsh. We even found some Redheads, the duck for which Horicon Marsh was primarily restored. All in all, it was a fun way to end our extended season of birdwalks.

If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you will be able to join us for one or more of our field trips during the 2015 birdwalking season.
