(Photo of Barred Owl ...) March Bird Walk - Dorothy Carnes Park

Our first walk of the year was a joint walk with the Friends of the Glacial Heritage Area. About 30 people showed up on a cold, windy day at Dorothy Carnes Park (Rose Lake) near Fort Atkinson. Cabin fever is a great motivator! The trails had icy portions but we managed to cover several of the different habitats in the park with few issues. We were rewarded with views of 22 species (full list below), a good number for this time of the year. Special treats included a visit by one of the resident Barred Owls. They often fly over to check out humans in their territory. Also treats were watching several Brown Creepers work the trees and a seemingly unstoppable pair of Downy Woodpeckers in a flying courtship through the canopy. Wonderful walk on a not so wonderful day. Special thanks to Jennifer Lanzendorf for keeping the list of the species sighted!

If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you will be able to join us for an upcoming field trip.
