June Bird Walk - Dorothy Carnes Park (East Side)
A forecast of rain may have kept some birders away but it turned out to be an exceptionally fine day for birding once we took the field. Highlights of the walk included watching a number of Black Terns flying from one small pond toward Rose Lake with food. Obviously this Wisconsin declining species is breeding here in some numbers. Another highlight was seeing several Red-headed Woodpeckers, one of which posed in plain sight for quite a while. And then there were the juvenile Pied-billed Grebes, still sporting their colorful "caps". All these along with a number of the "usual suspects". A full list of sightings is given below.
Not listed among the bird sightings but pictured above are two insect species that caught our attention. Since we couldn't identify them during the walk, we are presenting their photos here along with their names. As we've often said, you never know what you're missing when you aren't on the walk.
If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you will be able to join us for an upcoming field trip.
27 species were seen on this walk.
