June Walk
June Bird Walk - Horicon NWR
We held our June walk on Saturday, June 21. A small group of birders had a great time walking a portion of the Auto Tour, then the Egret Trail and Boardwalk at the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. The recent flooding and changable weather forced us to move the walk at the last minute, which probably limited the number of birders who could join us. It had the good effect of allowing us to walk the Auto Tour with no cars to be concerned about as high water in places resulted in a ban of autos.
We were able to see many of the birds you'd expect this time of year, while others were surprisingly missing. We saw no gulls at all, for example! There was no shorebird habitat at any point on the walk. We attribute this state of affairs to the weather as well. This was somewhat made up for by the sighting of several just fledged birds of various species, including Red Winged Blackbird, American Coots (see photo above) and of course Canada Geese. All in all, this proved to be an interesting and informative event. Thanks to all who participated!
If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you can join us for one of the others in this series.
