July Bird Walk - Glacial Drumlin Trail

An enthusiastic group of birders set off on our July walk on the Glacial Drumlin Trial. Despite it being a muggy day with smoke from Canadian wildfires in the air spirits were high and the birds cooperated. Highlights included multiple Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, at least two separate birds; Black-terns; and a family of Ospreys.

Birding List for July Walk: Glacial Drumlin State Trail--Lake Mills west to Zeloski Marsh, Jefferson, Wisconsin, US Jul 15, 2023 8:28 AM - 11:42 AM Protocol: Traveling 1.0 mile(s) Checklist Comments: 70; partly cloudy/much haze; W 5 mph (start) to 77; partly cloudy/haze; W 5 mph (end). Jefferson-Dodge Counties Birding Walk led by Brad Webb and Karen Etter Hale with help from all the participants. Walk from Korth Park--Elm Point parking lot to trestle and back (2.1 miles total). 4 E. chipmunks, 1 deer, 1 gray squirrel, a snake (probably a garter snake) along the trail, and a predated turtle nest. 41 species Mourning Dove 7 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2 Very active. We got many good looks as the birds perched high in dead branches. American Coot 1 On Marsh Lake. Sandhill Crane 2 Heard only. Ring-billed Gull 1 Black Tern 4 Great Blue Heron 2 Flying west north of Korth Park. Turkey Vulture 1 Osprey 4 2 adults and at least 2 young in nest on platform at Korth Park. Bald Eagle 1 Flying. Belted Kingfisher 1 Downy Woodpecker 4 At least 1 male and 1 juvenile male. Northern Flicker 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 All of us got good looks as it sang. Great Crested Flycatcher 1 Seen, not heard. Eastern Kingbird 2 Warbling Vireo 2 Black-capped Chickadee 7 Purple Martin 10 Probably many more. Soon after the trip ended, there was a group of at least 50 birds high above the martin house, but they moved too fast to see if it might have been a mixed flock which included swallows.
