July Walk
July Bird Walk - Korth Park
On a cool but warming July day, we walked the trails through the restored prairie of Korth Park, studying the prairie foliage, birds, dragonflies and damselflies, and butterflies. There were fascinating examples of each to see.
Probably the treat of the day was watching a family of Northern Harriers - Dad, Mom and three fully fledged youngsters - as they flew around the western portion of the park. We were able to see the adults bringing in newly captured prey for the youngsters, and to watch the amazing exchange of food in the air. This was something even experienced birders hadn't seen before. In addition, we had a flyover by a young Bald Eagle, a few by an Osprey and, after hearing several for much of the walk, finally got good views of a Common Yellowthroat Warbler. We also had great views of several beautiful dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies, as well as examining a prairie-full of wildflowers. All in all, we had a wonderful time.
If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you can join us for one of the others in this series.
