(Photo of Barred Owl ...) April Bird Walk - Rose Lake (Dorothy Carnes Park)

A large turnout graced our first walk of the season at Rose Lake. We think folks were so happy to finally have a great day to be out that they had to come. Or maybe it was just our charming personalities. Okay, we're betting on the day.

We got off to a great start with someone calling out "owl" before we'd even begun to walk. There was a Barred Owl not far away. S/he was watching us. We went on to have an excellent walk with some very unusual sightings. All the birds seen are listed below. We were also able to see what was left of a Bullhead impaled on a thorn (Shrike?), Black Capped Chickadees excavating a nest and a pair of White Breasted Nuthatches repeatedly taking food to a nest of their own. Great fun!

If you couldn't be with us for this walk, we hope you will be able to join us for an upcoming field trip.

40 species were seen on this walk.

Protocol: Traveling
0.5 mile(s)
Comments: 60 up to 70; mostly sunny; Wind East at 5mph. About 25 people attended the Jefferson-Dodge Bird Walk on the west side of Rose Lake, walking to the viewing platform, south through woods to southwest end of lake (1.0 mile total). Great looks at a Barred Owl, chickadee excavating a nest hole, two White-breasted Nuthatches carrying what was probably food to a nest hole, 1 eastern chipmunk, a probable raccoon sleeping high in a stub, and more. A gorgeous day to be out.
